Practical security guidance

Simple habits stop most attacks. Start with sign-in, updates and backups, then build from there.

Most break-ins start with a stolen password, a missed update or a convincing email. The steps below block the majority of them. Each one says how St Croix Tech can set it up or keep it running for you.

For everyone

Use passkeys where you can

A passkey signs you in with your phone or computer’s lock (fingerprint, face or PIN) instead of a password. It can’t be reused or typed into a fake site, so it resists phishing.
How we help: turning on passkeys for Microsoft, Google, Apple and your other key accounts.

Turn on multi-factor sign-in everywhere else

Add a second step to email, banking and work accounts. An authenticator app or security key is stronger than a text-message code.
How we help: rolling out multi-factor sign-in for your whole team.

Use a password manager

Let it create a long, unique password for every account, so one breach doesn’t unlock the rest. Protect the manager itself with a passkey or multi-factor sign-in.
How we help: choosing one and moving your team onto it.

Keep everything updated

Turn on automatic updates for computers, phones, browsers and your router. Replace devices that no longer get security updates.
How we help: monitoring and patching for workstations and servers.

Slow down on urgent requests

Be wary of messages that pressure you to pay, sign in or share a code right now. Check by calling a number you already know, and never share a sign-in code with anyone.
How we help: a short security walkthrough for your staff.

Back up what matters

Keep at least one copy of important files somewhere separate, and test a restore now and then. A backup you have never restored is only a hope.
How we help: backup monitoring with a restore test every quarter.

Secure your home Wi-Fi

Use WPA3 or WPA2 with a strong password, change the router’s default admin password, and put guests and smart devices on their own network.
How we help: home and home-office network setup from $149.

For businesses

Require passkeys or multi-factor sign-in for every account

Start with email and administrator accounts, then everyone else. Block old sign-in methods that skip the second step.
How we help: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Proton and Entra ID setup and management.

Separate your networks

Keep guest Wi-Fi, cameras, smart devices and point-of-sale systems apart from the computers that run your business, so one weak device can’t reach everything.
How we help: UniFi network design and segmentation.

Turn on threat protection at the gateway

Intrusion prevention and content filtering at the firewall block known attacks and malicious sites before they reach your devices.
How we help: UniFi gateway security, kept current for you.

Patch and monitor devices

Know when a computer, server or firewall falls behind on updates or goes offline, and fix it before it becomes an outage.
How we help: monitoring for workstations, servers, firewalls and network devices.

Give people only the access they need

Limit administrator rights, review who has access each quarter, and remove former staff the day they leave.
How we help: access reviews and documented exceptions.

Stop emailing sensitive information

Passwords, account numbers and personal records sent by ordinary email can sit in inboxes for years. Use encrypted links that expire instead.
How we help: TRUDJ.net Secure, from $9 a month.

Watch the building too

Cameras and door access protect equipment and records, and their recordings help when something goes wrong.
How we help: UniFi Protect cameras and UniFi Access door control.

Write it down before you need it

Keep a current list of devices and accounts, a network diagram, and who to call during an outage or breach.
How we help: documentation as part of every project.

Not sure where to start?

A network and security assessment ($450, half credited to the project if you go ahead) shows where you stand and what to fix first. See all services and Services & Rates, email dan@stcroixtech.com or call (612) 433-2023.
